Waste on UK Beaches: Makeover Monday 2019 Week 14
Every year since 1994, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has organized the Great British Beach Clean. While picking up the waste found on UK beaches, they count the number of each type of item found and what length of beach was cleaned. One of the campaigns of the MCS is #STOPthePlasticTide which aims to eliminate single use plastic items. The breakdown of the items collected shows that plastics are a big problem with over 30% of the items being plastic pieces in the last two years.
For my visualization this week, I used the provided data along with the data I found for 2018 to look at what makes up the top 10 waste items. Eight of the items remained the same with plastic pieces being number one both years.
